Ash To Art Glasgow School of Art

概覽

In May 2014, fire ravaged one of the most important landmarks of 20th-century architecture: the Glasgow School of Art, architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece.

Seeing a new start in the ashes of the devastation, we worked with the school to send each of 25 world-famous artists a piece of charcoal salvaged from the Mackintosh Building fire. They were asked to use the charcoal to create new works of art that could then be auctioned to raise funds and attract publicity for the rebuilding of the school – thereby creating a new building from the remains of the old.

The carefully curated group of artists were chosen from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds to reflect the international importance and influence of the Mackintosh Building.

The new artwork was displayed at a special exhibition in London, and then auctioned off at Christie’s, the world’s most famous auction house.

We raised more than £700,000 with bids from 28 countries, helping the famous art school literally rise from the ashes.

THE GASLOW SCHOOL OF ART AFTER THE 2014 FIRE
“It seemed appropriate to use a by-product of the school's fire as the tool of its rebirth. By putting debris from the fire into the hands of artists, it places the future of the School firmly in the hands of the UK’s creative community."
