Mirum Cape Town’s Bongeka Masango Breaks Down Her 3 Favorite “Pap Culture” Videos
J. Walter Thompson Cape Town’s Nwabisa Mda and Mirum Cape Town’s Bongeka Masango make up two-thirds of the YouTube channel “Pap Culture,” along with Thembe Mahlaba (shown in image above). Their “Pap Culture” channels brings the authenticity of South African youth culture to the digital landscape. With multiple videos spanning the page, we asked Bongeka to comb through them all and break down which three are her favourites.
This was our very first video on the channel. I love it not only because it’s so funny, but also because it reminds me of how far we’ve come as a channel. We shot this video with my camera balancing on a pile of lunchboxes because we didn’t have a tripod. We only had the camera and ourselves, but I still think it’s one of our best videos.
This was such a fun game to play and to have actress and TV host Khanyi Mbau agree to be on the channel and play along with us was a huge plus. In general, South African celebrities have been very kind to us, and this is a great example of one of them being a great sport.
I’m a huge fan of vocalist and songwriter Thandiswa Mazwai, and having her on the channel was honestly a dream come true for me. We talked about music, festivals and local slang! Thandiswa was so calm and relaxed in person. It was a fan moment for all of us.
