JWT Cape Town’s Nwabisa Mda Discusses Her Favorite “Pap Culture” Videos

Pap Culture 2

Alongside Mirum Cape Town’s Bongeka Masango and Thembe Mahlaba , J. Walter Thompson Cape Town’s Nwabisa Mda runs “Pap Culture,” a popular YouTube channel that brings the authenticity of South African youth culture to the digital landscape. After Bongeka highlighted three of her favorite videos last week, we asked Nwabisa to walk us through her top 3 favorites from the channel.

#BehindTheseWalls

In an effort to create really meaningful and impactful conversations around Women’s Month (August), we created a series to shine the light on female heroes doing incredible work in their respective fields. We kicked off the series with our own profiles and followed with features from nine other women, showcasing them as raw and as real as they are. The episodes highlighted their work, connecting with their personal lives,

views on the socio-economic/political climate of South Africa and the various challenges women face in South Africa and across the world. We wanted viewers to connect with each story and to highlight that we are all dynamic and powerful. The series was even featured on platforms like the Huffington Post South Africa and Marie Claire South Africa.

The 5 Minute Makeup Challenge ft. Cynthia Gwebu

This was one of the funniest videos we’ve ever done, and it gave us a chance to collaborate with South Africa’s biggest Beauty / Lifestyle YouTuber, Cynthia Gwebu. We wanted to do something that really was fun for both parties, and this challenge had the benefit of being a YouTube classic. The video unfolded and I was the joke of the entire thing because by the end of it all, I looked so crazy! Our viewers absolutely loved it and so did I, especially when I watched Cynthia and Thembe erupt into laughter after they saw what I looked like.

Picking Up Boys

“Picking Up Boys,” I believe, is one of our breakthrough episodes that really put our channel out there. We did

not intend to have this as an actual episode; we just wanted to test out what it would be like to shoot a video in a car. What happened was this: Way too often, women are cat-called when they walk down the streets, and we wanted to reverse the roles with this video. But as the day unfolded, things took a turn. I think it’s one of the episodes that really showcased our genuine personalities and the dynamic between the three of us – Thembe and I are wild and talkative and Bongeka just wanted to hide between the seats . This was such a fun and unexpected episode, and I love it so much.
