Overview
In Papua, thousands of children in remote areas do not have access to education. A lot of schools are closed because teachers are reluctant to teach in those areas. It is a major challenge that forces children to quit school.
Collaborating with Indonesia Mengajar, we discovered that children spent hours carving wood into a totem as a ritual to communicate and honor their ancestors. We combined this ancient tradition with a simple technology to make education more accessible and culturally relevant for children in Papua.
We implanted radio receiver inside blocks of wood so that when children carved the wood into a totem, they can listen to live lesson broadcasted from schools where teachers are available.
Teacher AM helps children get their basic human right by giving them access to education.
