Not Before 18 RDFL
|In Lebanon, child marriage is legal. And so girls are married off at a very young age without second thought. RDFL, a gender equality NGO, wanted to put an end to this and petition the government to set the legal age of marriage at 18. A few campaigns tackling early marriage have been launched before, but brought no change. Since it was a societal issue, they naturally tackled it from a societal point of view. We needed a new angle that would make society reconsider their acceptance of early marriage. So we decided to tackle a societal issue from a medical point of view. A point of view no one could dispute or refute, not even religious institutions. |
The campaign is, as of last Monday, October 11th, on the streets of Beirut, on TV and on social media. It was also picked up by local news stations and talk shows. The film has gathered in less than 5 days 200K+ views and 500+ reposts. It also allowed us to open a conversation on social media and on ground that has been very successful.
As a result, 5 days within the launch of the campaign, President Nabih Berri, the speaker of Lebanon's parliament, has referred the proposed law on the protection of children from early marriage, to the Administration and Justice Committee for discussion. The new law proposal was submitted 7 month ago and as a result of the campaign, it was referred 5 days ago to the Committee for discussion.
