Check News Libération

Overview

On the occasion of the pre-election debate in France and up until the eve of the final vote, a search engine run by journalists was created. On the internet, search engines respond to our every question with millions of results. How do we navigate this overload of information?

Liberation and its ‘Desintox’ service launched CheckNews.fr, a site where investigative journalists replaced search engine algorithms for three days before the presidential election.

“Is France becoming an Islamic republic?” “Is Emmanuel Macron financed by Saudi Arabia?” “Has the Euro raised prices?”

Search engines respond to these kinds of questions millions of results – that aren’t always verified. And despite the steps taken by web giants against fake news, misinformation continues to be propagated all over the internet.

How would a journalist answer these questions? A few hours later, giving them time to dig, verify, and cross-check information.
