#TheNextHLR: Manuela Rondón

Manuela Rondón 2 600X842

Originally from the Dominican Republic, Manuela Rondón is currently a copywriting student at the Miami Ad School of Berlin. She previously received her Bachelor’s in Advertising, Creative & Management from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo.

This year, Manuela was named one of the five winners of JWT’s Helen Landsdowne Resor (HLR) Scholarship.

Humbled by her win, Manuela writes about what the Scholarship means to hear and looks forward to the journey that awaits at her internship and mentorship at JWT.

I have read and heard so many times, “Just do it”.  An incredible person once told me, “no matter if you think you can’t achieve it, if you really want it don’t try, do it. Is the only way to find out if you could or couldn’t make it.”

One morning of May 2016 I found the Helen Lansdowne Resor Scholarship email in my inbox. An international contest for creative women in the advertising industry. I never thought I would win such a contest. But that is the beauty of just going for it. Not always getting what you are seeking for, and instead gaining remarkable experiences or getting to unexpected places.

Shouting down all the excuses and insecurities, I applied for the Scholarship. Right after I applied, I read the prize description again. The little voice inside my head was excited, asking me to imagine how fantastic it would be to win the payment of the school tuition, plus an internship and a mentorship at JWT.”

If imagining was exciting, I can’t find the words to explain what I felt that night. I have never been more proud about my bad habit of checking emails before going to sleep. I jumped, I sat, I read it three times and then turned the lights on and read it twice more.

My siblings were sleeping and I woke them up. Asking them not to panic, but telling them that something extraordinary had just happened.

They were as excited as I was.

I couldn’t believe that I was one of the five winners. It was too much. That night I was supposed to sleep, but my eyes didn’t close. I was dreaming awake. One email opened a world of opportunities that completely changed my limits.

This scholarship will give me more freedom to enjoy this journey, to focus all of my energy on living and exploring, which is the most important part of the creative process. I read from John Bevins that ads should enrich people not impoverish them; so the more you have to share, the better.

Coming from a place where amazing people have few opportunities, my wish would be to share this one. But the least I could do is to make the best out of it.

When Miami Ad School Europe believed in me I jumped in with nothing defined or guaranteed, not knowing that every little step was going to bring me closer and closer to places I thought I would never go. This is definitely another great step, thank you; I am more than grateful and extremely happy.

Next stop after interning in Tokyo and Madrid will be JWT and I can’t wait.
