#TheNextHLR: Anagha Anand

Headshot 1

Each year, the Helen Lansdowne Resor (HLR) Scholarship is rewarded to five deserving students pursuing their independent studies around the world. The scholarship is named after JWT’s first female copywriter Helen Lansdowne Resor, who paved the way for female copywriters in the advertising industry. Not only does the scholarship award each recipient up to $10,000, but it also provides them with a paid summer internship at a JWT office in her respective region, a JWT employee mentor, and a “first look” placement consideration for future job employment.

A year after receiving this impressive recognition, our 2015 South Asia HLR Scholarship recipient Anagha Anand caught up with us to share what the scholarship has meant to her.

My name is Anagha Anand. I was one of the five winners of the prestigious Helen Lansdowne Resor Scholarship. I am pursuing my Bachelors degree in Film and Video Communication from the National Institute of Design, India.

I am currently moving to my and final year of studies there. I am honoured and humbled to have received this scholarship. It helped me financially, as it fully covered the fees to complete the course, but also to launch my career into the creative field. It provided a platform to start conversations with new and interesting people and gave me a boost of self-esteem and motivation to take on bigger projects.

Winning this scholarship gave me the confidence to take on design projects in college head on and complete it, to my full potential. Since my fees is taken care of, I can really put in all my effort into making sure my films turn out with a higher level of production than usual student films.

It really gave me an edge and also provided the freedom to explore with writing and to try out new methods of storytelling to create better content. Women are not uncommon in the film industry but there aren’t many who are leading and creating the content that share other women’s stories or explore storytelling of women’s issues.

I feel like the scholarship has really helped me break through that barrier and has given me enough courage and motivation to make sure that I’d do my best to change that. I am really excited to be interning with the agency’s Bangalore office and to be mentored by a creative. I am really looking forward to taking on the challenges of being in a new city, adjusting to the spaces and interacting with new people and learning a whole lot.
