JWT London’s Gravity Light Makes Cannes Innovation Shortlist


The Innovation Lion recognizes problem-solving technologies that provide real-world solutions. Again this year, we are behind one of the innovations on shortlisted at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Gravity Light, brought to life by JWT London and Shell, is an off grid light funded by Shell, using the power of gravity to create light. Gravity Light generates power without batteries, using only a weight that powers an LED light.

80% of Kenya have no electricity, mostly relying on kerosene for light and cooking. Not only is kerosene unhealthy, but the lack of light reduces time for study and work. We launched Gravity Light in Kenya by visiting off grid communities and telling stories each night under Gravity Light. We reached 30,000 people across Kenya and created a content driven campaign to engage and inspire global millennials.

If launched worldwide, this innovative technology has the potential to reach and change the lives of a billion people still living without electricity.

This year's 31 finalists are drawn from 15 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Japan, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UAE, UK and the USA.

Those that have made it on the Innovation shortlist will present and defend their ideas live in front of the jury on June 17-18 in Palais II and on June 19 on the showcase stage at the Lions Innovation Festival.
