Intern Spotlight Series: Risha Dewan

This week’s Intern Spotlight Series features Risha Dewan, Account Management Intern at JWT Singapore. Risha is a rising junior at Mount Holyoke college where she studies Economics and Politics.

What drew you to JWT? — JWT brings something new to the table with every single advertisement they produce. The agency attracts people who are ambitious and incredibly passionate about any task that they are working on – and they produce results. Additionally, the environment is supportive in the sense that it builds upon the ideas of every individual involved, allowing for a more holistic approach in which people can learn from one another.

What are your primary responsibilities? — I assist the Account Management Team under Johnson & Johnson. My main tasks include researching key trends that are universal across APAC, contributing ideas to help company briefs and new pitches, and brainstorming for various campaigns, specifically Listerine. More recently, I have been exploring new businesses the company can take on within Asia and developing a growth plan through examining a myriad of booming sectors.

What are 3 tips to being a successful intern?

 1)    Actively Listen – The exposure you get as an intern at a company in any field is something to be appreciated. You’re going to be able to shadow and learn from experienced professionals. Take advantage of those opportunities. Hear the advice that they give you, along with the constructive criticism so that you can improve.

2)    Develop Good Working Relationships –  I’m a firm believer in the idea that the people around you can really make or break an experience. Build relationships with your coworkers and take the time to learn about other divisions to find out how everything pieces together to form a campaign. Learn how other people work so you can build upon that and become a contributing team member.

3)    Reflect – Be able to reflect on your time spent at work each day and the tasks that you took on. Through further reflection, you will be able to see the things you are doing right, areas you can improve on and the next steps you can take.

Do you have a personal motto? — Work hard. Stay humble.

What advertising lingo or buzzword do you most overuse? — “Consumer journey,” referring to the ways in which consumers are discovering, researching and buying products.

Favorite JWT ad campaign? — I’m a huge fan of the PUMA Forever Faster Campaign in which the emphasis is on rebranding PUMA as the fastest sports brand in the world. The print ads are eye-catching and the TVCs never fail to bring out a twist at the end, which adds a touch of lightheartedness to a campaign so focused on determination and confidence.

What are you most looking forward to in your remaining weeks at JWT? — I’m looking forward to seeing what new brands J. Walter Thompson takes on and any future pitches that happen in the coming weeks. But mostly, I’m just enjoying what is left of this internship! I’ve been fortunate enough to work at this company for the summer and meet some great people – I’ll definitely be sad to leave this place.
