2015 HLR Scholarship Winner Lilli Ridder on the 'Real World'

Headshot Lilli1 Copy 1

Each year, the Helen Lansdowne Resor (HLR) Scholarship is awarded to five female creative students from all over the world. The scholarship is named after JWT's first female copywriter Helen Lansdowne Resor, who paved the way for female copywriters in the advertising industry. Not only does each recipient receive up to $10,000, they also receive a paid summer internship at a J. Walter Thompson office in her respective region, a JWT employee mentor, and “first look” placement consideration for future job employment.

One year after receiving the HLR Scholarship, our 2015 Europe recipient Lilli Ridder reflects on what the scholarship has meant to her.

Stunned, surprised, overwhelmed and extremely happy.

That is exactly how I felt a year ago when I heard about being selected as one of the recipients of the Helen Lansdowne Resor Scholarship. While people congratulated me and articles called me one of ‘the most talented female creative advertising students around the world’, I just couldn’t believe any of it.

One year later.

Having done internships in Stockholm and Tokyo, I ended my time of gathering experiences at J. Walter Thompson London, the placement which I was offered through the scholarship. I had the chance and opportunity to work with a lot of different creatives. Particularly I appreciated the close collaboration with Dave Dye, Head of Art at JWT London. He is not only a huge inspiration, but also one of the loveliest people I’ve met. His attention for detail is remarkable. Dave Dye will be remembered as the one person teaching me “Maximum meaning, minimum means” by Abram Games. Furthermore, I worked closely with Simon Sworn, Creative Director, and Kat Thomas, Copywriter. Seeing the two interacting together, makes you wish you were in a team like they are. Simon and Kat were taking care of all interns and made me feel like “home”.

Lastly, I want to tell you about the biggest lesson I’ve learned. It doesn’t seem like a big deal – however, it is important. If you really want something, if it’s your dream or if it’s just your next goal in life, then ask for it. You have nothing to lose. Don’t wait to be lucky, take matters into your own hands.

And that is exactly what I am going to try in the next month. The last two years have passed by as flipping fingers and now I will be graduating in September as an Art Director.

But I feel ready, ready for the real world, ready to start a new chapter.
