J. Walter Thompson Lisboa - Sustainability / ICON Model
Carbon Report 2014 / J. Walter Thompson Lisbon
In 2014, for the second time, J. Walter Thompson Lisboa measured and reported its GHG emissions with a total of 125 tonnes of CO2, showing a decrease by 33% compared to 2013.
Corporate carbon reporting offers businesses a competitive advantage allowing the identification of their more carbon intensive activities. Moreover, it allows businesses to identify and implement opportunities to reduce emissions and to define offsetting strategies.
J. Walter Thompson, the oldest advertising agency in the wold, celebrated 150 years in December 2014. Operating in Portugal for 34 years, the Lisbon office has been keeping up with the growing demand of clients who increasingly favour agencies that integrate sustainable practices in their activity.
Therefore, J. Walter Thompson Lisboa started in 2011 an internal environmental sustainability tool, the ICON Model "Intelligent Consumption Model", aiming to integrate more sustainable practices in the office, implementing measures to reduce its carbon footprint through energy and water savings, by reducing the consumption of paper and plastic, promoting videoconferencing, encouraging the use of bicycles in commuting home from work and promoting recycling – about 1543kg of waste paper was recycled in 2014.
J. Walter Thompson Lisboa offset its 2014 emissions by purchasing carbon credits generated by a GHG emission reduction project which seeks to mitigate and recover methane generated from manures in piggeries in Brazil.
