Tarun Rai Named One of India's Most Trusted CEOs
WCRC Leaders Asia, available both in print and online, is one of the leading magazines in Asia. The India edition of the magazine has the most viewership across all business magazines in the country.
The mag is a niche media venture of WCRC, World Consulting Research Corporation, a global brand equity management and consulting firm that leads the continent with special brand equity research, reports, and analysis. Each year, WCRC hosts an event called the WCRC Leaders Asia – India’s Most Trusted CEOs 2017.
The annual event is centered on honoring transformational leadership. It recognizes CEOs who have steered their organizations to great heights and who continue to build upon their success.
On May 5th, our very own Tarun Rai, CEO of JWT South Asia, was recognized as one India’s Most Trusted CEOs.
After working at JWT for 19 years, Tarun then joined Worldwide Media as CEO in 2008, before returning to JWT in January 2015 as the Chief Executive Officer of our South Asia region.
What was Tarun tasked with upon returning? In an interview with Forbes India, he said:
“The first was to focus on the right thing, and for me, that was growth. I wanted everyone’s attention, energy, commitment and passion on growing the company. And if everyone is aligned to that, the costs and profits manage themselves. The second was to fill up all the important positions quickly. The third was to set the culture right. I removed the frosting from my cabin door to give a signal that we’ve got nothing to hide. It is important to empower people. And lastly, it is all about teamwork.”
Now two years into his role, Tarun has delivered on all fronts. After only a year in the seat, he drove JWT South Asia to achieve a double digit growth rate and was featured in the top spot of the Gunn Report’s India agency rankings for 2015. Contract Advertising, part of the JWT South Asia group, ranked #3 in the same report.
In 2016, groups across the JWT South Asia market, earned over 140 new pieces of business and also made leaps in attracting and retaining talent. In fact, 22% of new hires to the region are boomerangs – people who are returning to JWT. With that, JWT India will also begin focusing on hiring non-advertising talent and employing a blind recruitment process to fight unconscious biases.
At the WCRC event, Tarun was also invited on a panel entitled “A CEO’s perspective and insights on sustainability and growth during rough weathers: an organization of excellence.” His fellow panelists included Rohit Ohri, CEO of FCB India; Parag Kulkarni, Managing Direction of A O Smith; and Umesh Revankar, CEO & MD of Shriram Finance.
